The sophisticated electrochemical measuring system makes it possible to determine the fineness of almost any item containing gold. Objects made of platinum or palladium as well as rhodium-plated jewellery can also be identified.

Please note: The CaratScreenPen is not suitable for testing silver jewellery and is based on a purely superficial measurement. In case of doubt, we therefore recommend filing the test objects prior to measurement. For further information, please refer to the instruction manual. No, the CaratScreenPen only measures the surface. For a reliable test, the test specimen must therefore also be ground down. Typically, you test one spot first, then grind it down, and repeat the test. If the value continues to drop the closer you get to the core, that should raise a red flag.
It is not possible to test silver jewellery with the CaratScreenPen. It works only for gold (including rose and white gold), platinum, and palladium. Caution: It would leave a black mark on silver jewelry and simply indicate “not gold.”
The best way to determine the composition of a jewellery alloy is with the CaratScreenPen. Using an electrochemical measurement, the CaratScreenPen determines the fineness (karat) of gold jewelry in a matter of seconds.
Please note that the test probe must be replaced every 3–6 months. When ordering, make sure to check whether you have a V1 or a V2 device. A V1 device is compatible only with a V1 test probe, and a V2 device is compatible only with a V2 test probe.
The fiber-optic pen removes contaminants from your test objects as well as from the calibration disc. Rub the fiber-optic pen against the test object to remove body oils and other impurities (especially on jewelry). The measurement should then be taken at exactly that spot
The CaratScreenPen determines the karat weight or the percentage of the alloy. However, this is only done within certain tolerance ranges. These are limited to the karat weights 8, 9, 12, 14, 18, and the range between 21 and 24 karats. The respective tolerance range is then also expressed as a percentage.
