Is the sound test a good method for detecting counterfeits?
The sound test is only of limited use for reliably verifying the authenticity of precious metals. Only a trained ear can detect counterfeits this way; however, with some alloys or certain manufacturing processes (e.g., sintered counterfeits), the sound can be imitated very effectively. Therefore, this test alone is not sufficient and cannot replace other testing methods.
